PLASTIC CARD FAQS

What’s the difference between the available plastic card stocks and printing styles?

Thin Plastic Cards
PrintRobot’s thin, flexible plastic card stock is printed on 20pt material with a matte finish. The minimum order for our thin plastic cards is 500 quantity.

Thick Plastic Cards – PVC vs Laminated Stock
PrintRobot’s thick laminated cards are available in PVC and Laminated. PVC products are printed on a solid piece of plastic similar to a PVC pipe. Laminated or PolyLam products are printed and then laminated with a piece of plastic above and below to form the final piece. Both have very good quality outputs and are extremely durable.

If you require a magnetic strip, PVC cards are your only option. If your design contains heavy ink coverage and/or small fonts and you are printing less than 500 pieces Laminated products are recommended. Laminated products also offer faster turnaround than offset printing and have a minimum of only 100 quantity.

Thick Plastic Cards – Digital vs Offset Printing
We use 2 different printing processes for our plastic cards. In most cases, customers are unable to tell the difference between them however there are some advantages and limitations to each.

Digital printing is perfect for small quantities of plastic cards with super fast turnaround available (1 – 2 days with rush service).

Offset is the traditional printing method. It handles heavy ink coverage and small fonts better. In addition, the cost per piece goes down dramatically as quantities increase. The minimum quantities for offset printing are higher and turnaround times take longer (3 – 5 days for Laminated, 10 – 15 days for PVC).

What’s the minimum order and fastest turnaround for plastic card printing?
Thin Plastic Cards have a minimum quantity of 500 and fastest turnaround of 5 – 7 days.

Laminated Plastic Cards have a minimum quantity of 100 and fastest turnaround of 3 – 5 days.

Thick PVC Plastic Cards (< 500) are printed digitally. These have a minimum quantity of 25 and fastest turnaround of 1 – 2 days.

Thick PVC Plastic Cards (500+) are printed using the traditional offset printing process. These have a minimum quantity of 500 and fastest turnaround of 10 – 15 days.

How does sequential numbering / variable text work?
This is available on our PVC plastic cards and allows each card to contain unique data on it such as a name and/or number. It basically works the same as a data merge. All we need is an Excel file containing the data you would like to merge. Click Here to learn more by downloading our File Setup Guide.
